Precautions for using PC lighting ready boards in rural scenes in Africa
PC lighting ready board body: polycarbonate plastic, with advantages of insulation, impact resistance, and rust prevention; Shortcomings include aging due to high temperature exposure, fear of open flames, and susceptibility to deformation under external pressure. Key considerations for African rural areas: high temperature and strong sunshine, sand and dust, rainstorm and humidity, unstable voltage, lack of professional electricians, mosquitoes and rodents.
1、 Installation points
1. Installation location
Prioritize avoiding prolonged direct sunlight exposure, as it can accelerate the aging, brittleness, and fading of PC lighting ready boards, reducing their strength; If there is no obstruction, it is recommended to install a simple sunshade.
Stay away from areas with standing water or direct rainwater, with a height of at least 1.2m above the ground to prevent rainwater from splashing in or being touched by children; Do not install it on low earthen walls or areas that are prone to flooding.
Stay away from livestock activity areas to prevent cows and sheep from colliding with the box; Avoid dry hay and firewood piles. Although PC materials are flame retardant, high temperatures and open flames can still damage the box and pose a risk.
2. Fixing and sealing
The wall is firmly fixed, and the screws are matched with waterproof washers; The sealing ring of the box door must be intact to prevent dust, termites, and small insects from entering the box and causing short circuits.
Ensure proper sealing and sealing of cable entry and exit holes (with rubber gaskets/sealants), as dust is a common cause of power distribution failures in Africa.
3. Grounding protection (of utmost importance)
Although the lighting ready board has a PC insulated casing, the internal circuits and lighting system must be reliably grounded; The grounding rod should be buried deep enough, and in areas with dry soil, saline water can be poured to improve the grounding resistance.
The grounding wire cannot be omitted, as lightning strikes and leakage can cause electric shock accidents, and lightning strikes are more common in rural Africa.
2、 Electrical use
1. Load matching
Strictly use according to the rated current of the box, do not add lamp heads or sockets arbitrarily, and avoid overloading and heating; In rural areas, high-power equipment is often installed without authorization, which can easily burn the terminals.
In areas with large voltage fluctuations, it is recommended to install surge protectors (SPDs) to resist lightning and power grid surges and protect lighting circuits.
2. Switches and wiring
Regular tightening of terminal screws: Due to the large temperature difference between day and night, metal can easily loosen due to thermal expansion and contraction, and false connections can cause overheating and damage to the PC box.
Wiring should not be exposed, and the wire specifications should match the circuit current; It is prohibited to directly crimp multiple wires without pressing cold pressed terminals.
3. Leakage protection
It is recommended to install residual current circuit breakers in the lighting circuit; The risk of electrical leakage significantly increases in humid environments (rainy season).
3、 Daily maintenance
1. Regular inspection cycle
During the dry season: Clean up the sand and dust outside the box, check for cracks in the box door and sealing ring;
Rainy season: Focus on checking whether the water intake, condensation, and grounding are intact.
2. Key points of PC box inspection
Observe whether the box is yellowed, cracked, or brittle; Once aging cracks appear, replace the box in a timely manner to prevent the box from cracking and exposing live parts.
Check the hinges and locks of the box door to prevent dust and water from entering if the door is left open for a long time.
3. Prohibited operations
Do not use sharp objects to strike the PC box; Do not weld or bake with open flames on the surface of the box.
Non professionals are not allowed to open the cover for maintenance; Power off operation, develop the habit of disconnecting the main switch before maintenance.
Do not pour water into the box, and do not directly wipe the components inside the live box with a damp cloth.
4、 Environmental risk response (unique to rural Africa)
1. High temperature exposure: Long term exposure to sunlight can significantly shorten the lifespan of PC, so UV resistant PC materials are preferred for selection; Ordinary PC enclosures age quickly when used outdoors.
2. Termites and mice: Take good care of cable protection, seal gaps, and rodent bites on wires are common causes of short circuits and fires.
3. Lightning: Remote rural areas have a high probability of lightning strikes, so external lightning protection measures should be taken, along with internal SPD and regular retesting of the grounding system.
4. Sand and dust: Check the seal after each strong wind, as dust accumulation can reduce insulation and cause creepage short circuits.
5、 Safety emergency response
If there is a burnt smell or smoke inside the box, immediately cut off the upstream power supply and do not touch it when opening the box;
If the box is broken or the internal components are damaged, stop using it and replace it in a timely manner. Do not temporarily assemble it and continue to operate it with electricity.
