Technical specification for cross-sectional dimensions and compression ratio of sealing strips for indoor lighting electrical ready boards in rural Africa

I. Overview

Indoor lighting electrical ready boards in African rural areas, different from outdoor boxes, are installed indoors in farmers. Although there is no direct risk of rain, they generally have large temperature differences between day and night, high air humidity, high indoor dust, and are prone to condensation in the morning and evening. At the same time, due to the limitations of local sheet metal processing level, the flatness deviation of the box and door panels is large, and the operation and maintenance conditions are weak. Once the equipment seal fails, condensation and dust intrusion can cause corrosion and short circuit of circuit breakers, terminals, and meters. The conventional protection level of this type of electrical ready board project (ESKOM rural indoor lighting matching) is designed according to IP54, and the sealing strip is the core component to ensure box protection and suppress condensation intrusion. The cross-sectional specifications and compression ratio of the sealing strip cannot be selected arbitrarily, and must match the indoor working conditions, sheet metal tolerances, and long-term aging requirements.

Design concept for indoor box sealing: Priority should be given to using hollow D-type EPDM sealing strips, which have stronger fault tolerance for door panel warping and uneven sheet metal gaps compared to solid rubber strips; Compared to high-density sponge strips, the compression permanent deformation under long-term standing at high temperatures is smaller, making it suitable for indoor scenes in Africa that require less maintenance and long-term operation.

2、 Recommended cross-sectional size of sealing strip

This specification is a batch mature application specification for ESKOM rural indoor lighting electrical ready boards, without mandatory unified national standards, and belongs to the project engineering finalization parameters:

1. Main seal (cabinet door sealed in one circle, preferred): D-type hollow EPDM extruded sealing strip, with a cross-sectional free size of 8 mm (height) x 10 mm (width). This size is suitable for door frame slots with a depth of 5-6 mm. The door gap design has sufficient reserved space, taking into account the compression stroke and rebound margin. It is the most universal specification for indoor lighting boxes; Alternative specifications of 7 mm × 10 mm and 9 mm × 12 mm are suitable for scenarios where the box is too large or the door frame groove is modified.

2. Optional solid flat strip (only used for joint and cover plate auxiliary sealing, not recommended for cabinet door main sealing): thickness 5 mm, width 10 mm. The contact surface of the solid rubber strip has high rigidity, and slight deformation of the sheet metal may cause local compression failure, making it easy for condensation to penetrate through the gaps. It is only used as an auxiliary seal.

3. Card slot U-shaped side foam strip: The free height of the foam body is 6-8 mm, suitable for card mounted door frames, and suitable for plastic shell indoor boxes.

Material matching requirements: Use peroxide vulcanized EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber with a Shore A hardness of 50 ± 5. The large temperature difference between day and night in Africa makes sulfur vulcanized EPDM prone to rapid aging and pulverization in humid and hot environments; The permanent deformation of material compression shall be ≤ 25% according to ASTM D395B (70 ℃/22h) to ensure long-term rebound performance. The corner of the sealing strip should preferably be molded into a one-piece corner, and the docking position of the straight strip is a high-risk point for leakage, which should be minimized as much as possible.

3、 Compression ratio design index

Compression ratio calculation formula: Compression ratio=(free height of sealing strip - height after compression) ÷ free height of sealing strip × 100% Compression ratio is the core of sealing design. Insufficient compression leads to sealing failure, while excessive compression can cause rubber creep, permanent flattening, and loss of rebound after a period of use. Provide indoor box control indicators by material:

1. Hollow D-type EPDM (cabinet door main seal): nominal target compression rate of 25%, control range of 20% to 30%. Taking the mainstream 8mm free height D-type rubber strip as an example: target compressed height=8mm × (1-25%)=6mm; After assembly, the door gap should be controlled within the range of 5.6mm to 6.4mm. This interval can fill the small uneven gaps in sheet metal, block dust and condensation, and prevent the rubber strip from being excessively squeezed for a long time.

2. Closed cell foam EPDM (high condensation and humidity indoor alternative): compression ratio of 30% to 40%, with an upper limit strictly prohibited from exceeding 45%. Sponge glue has good sealing and adhesion, but permanent deformation is very obvious when compressed too much, making it unsuitable for long-term static and low maintenance of the box.

3. Solid EPDM flat rubber strip: compression ratio of 20% to 25%, maximum not exceeding 30%. Solid rubber has a small elastic margin, and excessive compression can easily lead to stress relaxation.

4、 On site risk of compression rate deviation (key focus of indoor scenarios in Africa)

1. Compression rate less than 20%: Insufficient contact pressure of the rubber strip will cause intermittent gaps in the slightly warped position of the door panel, and dust will continue to enter the box. Condensation generated by the temperature difference between day and night will deposit along the gaps on the copper bars, terminals, and meter surfaces, inducing leakage and short circuit faults. Rural areas in Africa have high levels of dust and humidity indoors, and the probability of faults caused by slight gaps is much higher than in conventional indoor power distribution environments.

2. Compression rate higher than 30% (hollow D-strip): The rubber strip is compressed for a long time and continues to creep in high temperature indoor environment. After a few months, the rebound ability decreases, and the rubber strip cannot rebound to fill the gaps, gradually leading to the failure of the seal. Moreover, excessive clamping force can cause deformation of the door lock buckle and difficulty in closing the door panel. Farmers are prone to violent operations on site, further damaging the structure of the box.

5、 Key points of supporting engineering design

1. Metal limit steps must be installed at the door gap, and compression should not be solely controlled by the lock buckle to avoid assembly workers tightening the lock buckle too tightly and damaging the rubber strip due to excessive compression;

2. The sealing strip should be arranged continuously throughout the entire circumference, and the joints should avoid the bottom of the box as much as possible. The bottom is the most easily invaded location for condensation and water accumulation;

Although indoor boxes are not directly protected from rain, condensation is the primary risk source. The sealing design cannot simply copy the loose scheme of ordinary IP30 indoor boxes in China, and must be controlled according to IP54 dust and splash prevention standards;

During the factory inspection, in addition to IP protection sampling, additional door compression sampling should be conducted to measure the remaining height of the rubber strip after closing the door with a feeler gauge and verify whether the compression rate falls within the design range.

6、 Conclusion

The sealing strip for indoor lighting electrical ready boards in rural Africa is recommended to be D-type hollow EPDM with a cross-section of 8mm × 10mm, a nominal compression rate of 25%, and a control range of 20% to 30%. This combination has been validated through batch projects, balancing multiple constraints such as sheet metal tolerances, humid and hot condensation environments, long-term aging, and on-site assembly, and is suitable for special indoor working conditions in rural Africa. The selection of sealing strips cannot be solely based on the protection level. Compression rate control is a key parameter that is easily overlooked but directly determines the service life of the box.
